A Fun Interview with Sean Kastner

Today’s blog post is a bit different than the previous ones. Today I will be interviewing the President and one of the owners of Kastner Auctions, Sean Kastner. I decided instead of having a super formal interview, it would be much more fun to see the not-so-formal side of a man who has been with Kastner Auctions for over 25 years, helping it grow to the business it is today.

1. Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?

ANSWER: “A balanced mixture of both — a delegater”

2. You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?

ANSWER: “A combination of the rainbow surrounding a pencil because I am focused on bringing visions to manifestations”

3. We finish the interview and you step outside the office and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million. What would you do?

ANSWER: “I’d cash it in and buy and island and invite the people with the biggest hearts and best minds to live on and do what they are doing in Auroville, and make a massive preserve depending on how much more funds we could raise.”

4. What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?

ANSWER: “I think about the state of mind I am in. If I am in a not so good mood, I think about what I can do to make myself feel better. I focus on what is next. It is my time to regroup and think about how I can be more awesome.”

5. What’s your favorite ’90s jam?

ANSWER: “I like any strawberry jam… Kidding:  “Nirvana”

6. If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why? 

ANSWER: “Dolphin. Reason being is they are pleasure seeking animals who live in the moment. They are sentient beings aware of their freedom. They can do whatever they want, whenever they want so long as they stay in water ;).”

7. What was the last gift you gave someone?

ANSWER: “30 year old bottle of scotch for my father. Hey dad, If you are reading this, I love you!”

8. What were you like in high school?

ANSWER: “I was an extremist. Mildly anarchist, and an eclecticist. I brought the best out of everyone into what I know, project wise: one was universal peace, the other was Illuminati’s creative arts association…”

9. What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?

ANSWER: “Walking Dead. I was forced into it because I watched it the year before and there was a major cliffhanger. I am a temporary zombie junkie.”

10. What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?

ANSWER: “Kidnapped in Cuba.”

11. What inspires you?

ANSWER: “My mother, humanitarians, the phoenix fire bird, and pushing limits”

12. What do you work toward in your free time?

ANSWER: “Honing my marketing skills, creating new business systems, and drinking up useful knowledge.”

13. What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your resume alone?

ANSWER: “I am triple jointed.”

14. How would you rate your memory?

ANSWER: “What was the question?”

15. If you woke up and had 2,000 unread emails and could only answer 300 of them, how would you choose which ones to answer?

ANSWER: “By my  most important contacts.”

16. Describe the color yellow to somebody who is blind.

ANSWER: “Yellow is energizing, the aura of the sun, the first colors of warmth, powerful, gives earth life.”

17. You’ve been given an elephant. You can’t give it away or sell it. What would you do with the elephant?

ANSWER: “I would by the lot next to me, build a pen and send him to summer camp.”

18. Who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman?

ANSWER: “Batman. He has more accessories and more tricks up his sleeve than Spiderman.”

19. How would you convince someone to do something they didn’t want to do?

ANSWER: “Longthorn Cactuses have been proved to be very persuasive… KIDDING!  I usually focus on taking one for the team and let them know how important their contribution is, let them know how important it is and what benefits will become of it, I appeal to their nobler motives“

20. A penguin walks through that door right now wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here?

ANSWER: “Senor, global warming is coming and I have no ice cubes. I stay here?”

Closing

During the interview, it was interesting watching Sean’s face as I asked him the questions. It was fun and some of the answers I received I did not expect as much. This interview definitely shows that Sean is not only a businessman who works hard for his business, he is also a very entertaining man who views life in general as a gift. He has a sense of humor and is pretty easy to get along with, which translates into the business culture found in Kastner Auctions.

Auction in Edmonton Alberta Shows First Timers How To Get Great Deals

So you want to get huge deals at an auction? Well it is simple! Let us talk you through the process and the different ways on how to bid or register with us!

Bidding at Katsner’s Auctions

Firstly, there are three different ways to bid in the live auction which happens on Sunday at Kastner’s Auctions.

  1. Bid in person
  2. Bid online
  3. In person absentee bids
  4. Online absentee bids

Bidding in person

Let us talk about bidding in person during the auction. The first thing you will want to do is register, if you are not already in the system. We will discuss how to register a bit later on, lets  continue on with the “how to bid”.

Once you’ve been registered, you will receive a “paddle number” (usually it is a four digit number). The items in the auction are catalogued (given a corresponding lot number) and placed in a numerical order. The auctioneer will then begin “calling” the auction, which means he will announce the item and begin to also announce the prices. These prices will increase based on paddle numbers being raised.

To bid, all you would need to do is simply raise your paddle number (the one you received when you registered) and your bid will be placed. When you’re bidding, it is important to understand the auctioneer and the amount he is stating while calling out the item. By bidding on that item, you are agreeing to pay that amount for the item.

Bidding online

Bidding online is an option to attend the auction without physically being at the auction.  First, You pick your Auction, then you  register online and then log in on the website for this weekends auction. Once you log into the website, there will be an option to click on a green “bid” button.  When you click this button to bid on the items you want it’s the same as “raising your paddle” when you’re at the live auction in person.

In person absentee bidding

Now there is a third option to bid in the auction, and this can be used if you are unable to attend the live auction, and are unable to log in on the website to attend; it is called “in person absentee bids”. To do an in person absentee bid, come to Kastner’s Auctions, and fill out a form with the following information:

  • Your paddle/bidder number
  • The lot number
  • The maximum amount you are willing to pay for the item

In order to get your bid in on the system, you need to have the form handed in and filled out at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the auction! When this form is in, your bid is then done on your behalf by the auctioneer or clerk. How cool right? This process continues until you either win, or the maximum amount is reached and passed by your opponent bidder.

Online absentee bidding

The last and final way to place bids is an online version of the in person absentee bidding. During the auction preview on the day before you are able to log in online at the website and leave “preview bids”. This basically means that instead of the auctioneer or clerk bidding on your behalf, the computer will then bid on your behalf. This is done until you won the item or maximum amount is reached and passed by another bidder. Please set a good maximum bid,  your bid is encrypted on the system, I’d hate for you to lose something great for an extra $10 or $20.

How to Register with Katsner’s Auctions

To register with Kastner’s there are a couple of ways you can register with us, but keep in mind the following:

  • Registering in person will allow you to attend the live auction and leave in person absentee bids
  • Registering online will allow you to attend the online live auction and leave online absentee bids

Each # is specific or live bidding.  

Live bidders pay 12.5% buyers premium

Internet bidders pay 17.5% buyers premium

REGISTERING IN PERSON

To register in person, it is really quite simple! You would just need to attend the auction (which is every Sunday) and see one of the clerks at the front desk. They will ask you for your ID/drivers license, and a credit card. If you do not have a credit card, don’t fret! You can still participate in the auction, just leave your Drivers License for initial registration! Once the registration is completed, you will get a paper with your paddle number (bidder number) and a catalog via email (for free) or you may purchase one at the front desk.

One thing you should consider is the terms of sale. Please ensure that you read them carefully, as you become responsible for paying for the items you bid on and win. It is a contract you had just signed!

ONLINE REGISTRATION

To register online, you will need to go to http://bidlive.kauctions.ca/.  There’s an internet only auction ready for you on Wednesdays to view and the MAIN EVENT gets uploaded by Friday Evening. Click on Create Account, and follow the instructions. This needs to only be done once and then you will be a permanent member of the online bidding. Please note, you will need a credit card and an email to complete the registration. Also ensure all the information is correct and filled in properly.

If you plan to participate in the auction online, it is a good idea to do the registration at least 24 hours before the start of the auction. This is because the approval process is not an instant one, and it does require some time to verify all the information you enter into the form.

Please also ensure that you read all the posted terms and conditions. Bidding online is the same as bidding in person, and by accepting the terms, you agree to pay for the items that you win in the auction.

Auction Terms & Conditions

Regardless if you register online or in person, there are some terms and conditions that every member of the auction needs to be aware of. Online bidders will have a chance to read the terms and conditions when they log in to bid or preview items. The members who register in person will receive a copy of the terms and conditions, which is included on the bidder/paddle number.

Previewing the Items

Before you bid on the items in the auction, Try and view the assets before hand. The preview is very important, and you can examine them the day before the sale which is generally from 9am to 6pm. It is a good idea to make notes in your catalog so you can remember exactly which items you want and an amount you are willing to pay for some awesome auction treasures.

During the preview is an opportunity for you to test any equipment (if it is possible) you are considering purchasing. The catalog is to be used as a guide only, and all bidders are expected to preview the item, alternatively if you are located in a different country, you can email us questions on any item from our help desk located at the lower right hand corner of www.kauctions.ca

All items are sold “as is” or “where is” regardless if you have previewed and inspected the item or not. Any damage we find, we try to list it.

If you cannot make it to the auction in person, please remember the other options that are available and listed above, and you can place your bids.

Bidding

This is the fun part of the auction! There is, of course, an auctioneer who will sit from a central point in the facility, and there will be a few view screens in the auction stage area to assist bidders along. It will show the lot number, and a picture of the item.

The process begins with the auctioneer announcing the lot number and describe the item they are currently selling. The bidding will then start immediately after the description of the item, and it will be fast paced. If it is your first time at the auction, it is a good idea to arrive before the items you want are being auctioned so you can watch and get a feel of how the auction works.

The auctioneer will first suggest a starting price. If no one raises their paddle to bid, (s)he will lower the amount until someone bids on that amount.

“Who’ll give me one thousand dollars to start?”

To bid, all you would need to do is raise your paddle/bidder number, or click on the green “bid” button online. The auctioneer and the ring hands will recognize that you bid, and the auctioneer will then begin to ask for higher bids.

“I have eight hundred dollars, do I hear nine hundred?”

If someone decides they want to bid, (s)he will raise her paddle/bidder number. This will continue until no one else wants to bid any higher for that item.

“I have nineteen hundred dollars, who’ll give me nineteen-fifty? Going once, twice: SOLD! For nineteen hundred dollars to bidder number 268.”

A clerk will write down the winning amount and the bidder number. In the instance that there are several items with similar description and value, the announcer will state that there is a choice on the items. For example, lots 1, 2, 3, & 4 all are a boardroom chair.

“We are now offering 4 boardroom chairs. Let’s give choice on these four chairs”.

What this means is that the highest bidder will get a choice on the items when the auctioneer says “sold”. So if the bidder only wanted one item and already knows he wants only lot 4, he would tell the auctioneer and clerk that is the one he wants before the auctioneer begins selling the next item.

Once an item has been sold and clerked, the auction clerk and the auction office cannot make changes to lot assignments. Generally, the auctioneer will only give option and choice to the high bidder and will then “dish out” the remaining items in numerical order to the backup bidder and then to any other bidders who would like the remaining items at the highest bid price.

Payment

To pay for the items you have won there is a few options. One option is to come to the office and present the bidder/paddle number to the cashiers up at the front desk. We accept payments by Cash, Debit, Visa, or Mastercard. For the online auction, you have the option of paying online via your credit card, or you can come into the office to pay for the items personally with other methods.

Once the items you won are paid for you will get an invoice. With that invoice, you will go to the back and pick up your items!

You are responsible for the removal of your items. ALL ITEMS must be removed by Tuesday at 6PM. If you are unable to pick up the items, you may call and make other arrangements.

The Eternal Beauty Of A Diamond

If my quote is to etheric, then for the creationists, this may give the missing elements of why diamonds are diamonds and

The story of diamonds begins  billions of  years ago, beneath earth’s surface layer, under ultra-high pressures and intense heat. In fact, the oldest diamonds are more than 4 billion years old— as old as the planet itself ( or what science believes its age is)!. This is one of the a makes diamonds so sought after, as each one of these stones holds the secrets to our planet’s past.

In other words, owning a  diamond is owning piece of creations mystery .

Diamonds are unique, rare Precious, and I want another one! 😉

  • As mentioned earlier, conditions that support the formation of diamonds are pressure and heat: approximately 150 kilometers under the earth’s layer where the temperatures are a minimum of 1050 degrees Celsius. And these occurred in limited zones across the planet. ( Yes Canada ofcourse is blessed w/ these multi-faceted orbs)
  • These brilliant crystals were formed and remained in the earth’s mantle until volcanic eruptions brought them to the earth’s surface.
  • Once the magma, from the volcanic eruptions, that carried these dazzling gemstones cooled down, it took the shape of a carrot like pipes and formed into what is called as Kimberlite rocks. ( I snagged a picture of it, you can look at the top of this blog)
  • And today, diamonds are primarily sourced from these kimberlites.

The origins, the long journey, their everlasting nature and the limited places that these stunning rocks are found is what makes diamonds so rare and expensive.

Diamonds have a universal appeal, irrespective of what part of the world or which culture one belongs to, a diamond has and will always represent pristine beauty. So what is about a diamond that makes it so beautiful:

Always Remember The Four Cs

  • Cut- How a diamond is cut is responsible for how much light it reflects. The ideal cut is the round cut, also known as round brilliance, which has 58 facets, allowing for maximum reflection of light.
  • Color- The perfect diamond is colourless however due to the chemical present in the diamonds most of them taken on different colours such as  white, yellow, blue, pink, brown, black, orange and the rarest of them all- red.
  • Clarity- The appearance of a diamond is affected by the presence of any foreign material in the diamond or cuts and blemishes. These inclusions and structural imperfections hence are responsible for a diamond’s clarity.
  • Carat- The objective measure of a diamond is its weight. One carat = .2 grams or 200 milligrams, equal to 1/5 of a gram.

A perfect diamond is one which has no inclusions, is of round brilliance and 100 carats.

  • Diamonds are one of the world’s, and specifically Africa’s, major natural resources. An estimated US$13 billion worth of rough diamonds are produced per year, of which approximately US$8.5 billion are from Africa (approximately 65%).

 

  • Modern diamond mining started during the 1870s in South Africa, following the discovery of the Star of South Africa diamond (83.5 carats in size) on the banks of the Orange River (at the border of Namibia and South Africa) in 1869. A diamond rush followed and by 1888 the first working mines in the area were established. As prospecting increased, more diamonds were discovered in other southern African locations. The diamond industry has since expanded across southern Africa, making this the primary global location for diamond sources today.

 

  • The diamond industry employs approximately ten million people around the world, both directly and indirectly, across a wide spectrum of roles from mining to retail.
  • Global diamond jewellery sales continue to grow, increasing three-fold in the past 25 years, and are currently worth in excess of US$72 billion every year.
  • USA represents the largest market (50%), followed by Japan (15%), Italy (5%), India (3%), China (2%), The Gulf (2%) and other countries (23%). According to independent research, diamond jewellery is the most highly sought-after category of luxury goods, both by women for themselves and by men for gifts.
  • The value of diamond jewellery sold each year is approximately US$72 billion, which includes the cost of the diamonds, precious metals and other gems.
  • The Kimberley Process is a certification system that prevents diamonds from an area of conflict entering the legitimate diamond supply chain. The Kimberley Process ensures that only rough diamonds accompanied by a government-issued certificate can be imported and exported, providing an assurance that the diamonds are from conflict free sources. Under this United Nations mandated system, only countries that are part of the Kimberley Process can import or export rough diamonds. Today, 74 countries are members of the Kimberley Process, ensuring that more than 99% of diamonds are from conflict free sources. Anyone who imports or exports rough diamonds between these countries without a Kimberley Process certificate is breaking the law.
  • In addition to the Kimberley Process, the System of Warranties was developed by the World Diamond Council (WDC) to extend the Kimberley Process conflict free assurance to polished diamonds and provide a means by which consumers can be assured their diamonds are from conflict free sources. Its principal element is a declaration on the invoice accompanying every transaction (apart from the transaction directly to the consumer) of polished diamonds that declares the diamonds are ‘not involved in funding conflict and are in compliance with United Nations resolutions’. The System of Warranties provides assurance that diamonds are from conflict free sources all the way to the diamond jewellery retailer.

 

  • As one of Africa’s major natural resources, diamonds are helping transform southern Africa and the lives of its people. In particular, Africans are using the revenue from diamonds to create wealth for themselves. The diamond trade contributes approximately US$8.5 billion a year to Africa and is helping the continent in four key ways:
    • Financial: Diamonds provide a significant economic contribution to the countries in which they are found – for example diamonds represent 33% of the GDP of Botswana [approximately US$3.3 billion]
    • Health: Diamonds play a significant role in helping tackle the HIV pandemic in southern Africa through the funding of counselling, testing, education, treatment programmes, clinics and hospices
    • Education: Southern African countries are using the revenue from diamonds to help more children go to school for longer
    • Employment: More than 38,000 people in southern Africa are employed by the diamond industry

Top 5 things you can do to increase Your energy now!

Hi Friends, Sean! Kastner Here, You might not know it but i use to suffer from Chronic fatigue and  if you know me now:  I’m a hurtling ball of positive energy!  getting this information took a long time through trial and error…  this is the first 5 steps I learnt form all my travels and tribulation  to pump me up again!… let me give you the most important things you need to do now to make your energy SUPER SUPREME!

1. Drink The Right Water, Substitute soft drinks and coffee with H20!  -80% of people in North America are dehydrated, increase your water in take, Less Timmy’s more Aquafina… or BETTER yet PROPERLY FILTERED  WATER!  ( alkalyzed and remineralized is best!)

2. CAFFEINE BAD, Adaptogens GREAT!- Coffee is a diuretic, it forces you to run to the washroom and shed water that you need to remain hydrated. if you’re dehydated the conductivity of energy in your body is lessened… If you are dehydrated its near impossible to feel great >>>>SO THEREFORE: end the cycle.  minimize your hankerings for coffee and softdrinks with Smaller amounts of green tea ( matcha is amazing) or the Argentinian delight: Yerba Mate.  Ultimately one should replace caffeine with adaptogens (  they are substances that modulate your response to stress in the environment).

Adaptogens help with mental concentration, energy and help you stay emotionally level during crisis situations.  The First Thing I learnt with Chronic fatigue was how to boost myself,  I used Panax Ginseng to get that feel good energy going… it only works if you are hydrated though!  use it in liquid form you can get it at any Asian pharmacy.

4. Cardiovascular Excercise is amazing. Personally:  rainm, shine or snow I bike ride 3-7 KMs in the morning.  I know that isn’t everyones fancy So you should find what works best for you,  The fact is, the more you increase your heart rate, the more your blood flows, the more oxygen gets introduced into your blood stream.  Our number one source of energy is oxygen, the more clean air we breathe in, the better we feel, the more energized we are!  Holy run-on sentence Kastner auctionite 😉

5. one last tip for now. Make sure your vitamin D is up in winter, it’s responsible for many important processes in the body, will help curb the winter blues and more! Please research how much vitamin D you need though,  some health sources recommend well over a thousand IU’s per day, some say around 500. you have to choose what you believe though…

These are great actions that took away lots of my fatigue and gave me great energy. try at least 2 this week and feel the genuine improvement!

This is partially what you can do with your assets and what to look for in an auction house, PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH!

I want you to apply this formula for everything when it comes to selling in the Auction.  If you use it,  you will increase your income drastically,  here’s to our united success, if You do this, Me and my team will do the rest for you! 🙂

1. Make sure you have enough time to have it advertised, common things maybe auctioned off with a couple of days
notice BUT speciality items may  need a few weeks. The more time you give the auction company to advertise your assets,
the better they will perform.
2. Make sure your merchandise is getting exposed to enough people! we Believe with the increase in technology that
you absolutely have to have a simulcast auction solution ( Live and internet bidding) this can greatly increase your net
results.3. Clean assets means a higher R.O.I. at auction. people trust cleaner items and will bid higher if the item look as thoughthey were respected.
4. If you have “tons” of multiples of the same style, do not fl ood the market, fi nd a way to get the auctioneer to limit
supply. if you sell 10 widgets a week for a few months at 800 dollars per widget, it is better than selling ALL your
widgets next weekend for 100 dollars each, remember the law of supply and demand.
5. If you are an expert on your products, spend time with the auctioneers to make sure they know the key selling features
of your assets, your knowledge could make a difference of 50% or more on auction value. Attention to these details is
very important for maximum profit.

If the auction you choose pre-catalogues, make sure you help with the description. the difference between  a bowl with Asian markings &   a Soup bowl from the The Wanli shipwreck from the Ming dynasty  is an $800 difference Give us important details and we will enhance your products with providence and important details 6. Timing is key: Make sure that your auction timing make sense, Selling off a seasonal good in the wrong season may neta loss. Maximise on profit by timing out the greatest point of consumer demand if you can afford the time.
7. Make sure your items get maximum exposure. Having an auction advertised in the newspaper doesn’t cut it any more,
make sure your auctioneer advertises in multiple places, has a website that gets at least 3500 visits per week and has payperclick ad campaigns. it’s absolutely essential these days!
8. When in doubt check it out- See how their auctions function, visit their establishment next week and see what it looks
like DURING AN AUCTION!
9. Make sure the auction is bonded, call Services Alberta to find out. THIS IS CRUCIAL in determining if an auction
company is ethical or not.
10. Check out their rating with BBB except nothing less than an A rating. ( check out Kastner’s rating above)
11. See what fans are saying about them on facebook, (see Kastner’s reviews here)  check their amount of fans. The more an auction spends on social marketing is a sign that they are adapting to changes in the current marketplace. 12. Help with the marketing process, if you can create a list of all your assets fi rst, this saves time so an auction can spend
more time marketing your merchandise.
