Diamond Shapes, Facts and meanings From the Ages

Interesting Facts about the Most Recognized Diamond and Gemstone Shapes

Round Shaped Diamond

Popular Loose Round Diamond Shape

  • The “Round Brilliant Cut” Diamond Shape, also referred to as an “Ideal Cut” diamond, is a Round Cut Diamond that is cut with absolute mathematical precision, designed to give it maximum sparkle (Fire & Brilliance). It is the standard by which all other diamond shapes are compared to.

  • The Round Cut diamond shape typically has 58 facets. (including the culet):

    • On the Crown of the diamond (upper section) there are 8 bezel facets, 1 table facet, 8 star facets, and 16 upper girdle facets

    • On the pavilion of the diamond (lower section) there are 16 lower girdle facets, 8 pavilion main facets, and 1 culet

Emerald Shaped Diamond

Popular Loose Emerald Diamond Shape

  • Princess Cut Diamond can offer almost as much brilliance and fire as a nicely cut round shaped diamond. It was designed for it. The Princess Cut Diamond is also very good at hiding imperfections because of the way it is cut. You could consider it the best of both worlds.

  • Princess Cut Diamonds are typically square in shape, but can be rectangular too. Deep stones generally work better with the princess cut diamond.

Oval Shaped Diamond

Diamond Alchemy Symbol Meanings

  • The diamond is a symbol of refracting light to the alchemist. As such, the diamond is symbolic of the journey our souls make when we are trying to achieve higher understanding.

  • The goal for mankind is to walk a path on which our souls will shine and sparkle as brightly as the diamonds. On this path there will be many labyrinth turns (representative of the angles and facets of the diamond).

Diamond Symbol Meanings

It is in this spirit of metaphor, analogy, and symbolism than more than the literal translation of the symbol, it is the vibrational tone, or the higher energetic wisdom with which the symbol meaning resonates

Native American Symbol for Butterfly - A Diamond symbol motifShown left is a common motif among Native peoples indigenous to North America, Canada, and Mexico. It signifies the butterfly. Indian nations identify the butterfly with the concept of “immortality.”

Immortality here is seen in the migratory patterns of the butterfly where they flock by the millions after traveling thousands of miles – coming home.

This encapsulates the divine journey in which man is born, moves through his world ever-gleaning more insight into his true identity and finally, (ideally) returns to the site of his first breath to realize he is immortal in his existence because of the path he chooses. In other words, man leaves a legacy, which is his key to immortality.

Mystic Earth Diamond SymbolNow shown left is an alchemical, mystical, and astrological symbol for “Earth.” Also seen with a circle around it, it symbolizes the movement and rhythm of nature’s cycles (i.e., four seasons) as well as the Aristotelian elements.

The earth has long been worshipped by ancient mystics. It is a representation of harmony, stability, and oneness with all things – a communal arena in which the core (center point of the 4 diamond cross) represents a foundational energy of unity and well-being.

Futhark Dagaz Diamond SymbolThis diamond symbol (shown left) as well as the next consecutive one, are both from northern Europe and are identified as the runic system of “Futhark” – a symbolic language housing tremendous meaning in each emblem. This rune is called the Dagaz and is the Symbol of the Dawn.

It is considered to be the rune of break-through’s and represents attainment of the meaning of life – enlightenment, satisfaction, “ultimate truth” – that which the seeker holds most valuable is obtained. Further, the Dagaz embodies the concepts of: Awakening, insight, clarification, awareness, epiphany, new beginnings, and connections to the mystical in all things.

It is also emblematic of time and space as complementary elements. This rune speaks of the partnership between night and day with the center-point represented as the dawn. Metaphorically, the dawn marks an awakening to all new understandings. Futhark Ingwuz Diamond symbolThis (shown left) diamond motif is seen throughout the ages and cultures. So, literally, this symbol means creation of life.

This diamond symbol is also found in alchemical philosophies. Metaphysically speaking, this foundational image tells of creativity that is expressed by the culmination of the four elements: Four sides indicating earth, fire, air, and water.

Diamond Symbolism and Elemental Alchemy

In the alchemical realm, the skillful employment of all four of these elements leads the practitioner to infinite potential and Divine creativity. We see the center of this (alchemical) symbol void of design – indicating creation takes place through the path of least resistance. In other words, it is by allowing that we obtain our true creative purpose.

Aristotelian Element Symbols

Consider the above shown diamond symbols (more accurately, triangle symbols), which are also alchemical in origin. These symbols are considered to be the building blocks of all matter, of everything.

Indeed, diamonds themselves are made from carbon, which is a foundational building block of matter.

consider this for your next purchase, a diamond that expresses her spirit and soul for ever

Lets take a brief look at the last decades going concern  Canadian Diamonds   why are they more valuable and what makes them shine so bright

A thing beauty should not be the cause of ugly bloodshed. The lure of a Canadian diamond lies not just in its mesmerizing beauty but also in its conflict-free origins. Each of these diamonds from Canada’s mines undergoes an enhanced certification process that ensures that they were ethically sourced and that the ecosystem surrounding the mine was not harmed in any way.  Kneel, Black Diamonds:

Black is also stunningly beautiful. And where diamonds are concerned, black is not only beautiful, but is also rare.Tiny and relatively young, black and grey crystals appear naturally as deposits in the earth’s crust. These dark beauties have a unique crystalline structure that makes them absorb light, as opposed to reflecting light, which is what gives them their colour. more rare than other diamonds,  those whom value individuality, are one of a kind should pick black diamonds.

KNOW What to look for!

  • Look for the 4 Cs

    • Diamond’s colour

      • Light brown and yellow diamonds are more common

      • The whiter the stone the more valuable it is

      • This gradation is usually done in comparison to a master stone hence you can ask the jeweller for a master stone to compare your stone with.

      • Best way to check for colour is when the stone is unmounted

    • Diamond’s clarity

      • FL, IF:Flawless/Internally Flawless

      • VVS1/VVS2: Very Very Slight inclusions and blemishes ( not dectectable by the human eye with 10 x magnification

      • Excellent

      • Very Good

      • Good

      • Fair

      • Poor

    • Diamond’s carat weight

      • 1 carat (1ct) is equal to .2 grams or .007 ounces

      • carat weight does not reflect a diamond’s size

  • Diamond’s shape

  • Look for  laser-inscribed tracking numbers on the diamond as most Canadian Diamonds have them for enhanced traceability, you will need a magnifying glass to find the serial number

  • Diamond certificate (which should include)

    • Measurements

    • Clarity

    • Symmetry

    • Recognized diamond grading report from either of the organizations mentioned below

      • GIA Diamond Grading Report

      • GIA Diamond Dossier

      • American Gem Society Laboratories – AGS

      • The International Gemological Institute – IGI

      • European Gemological Laboratories – EGL

      • EGL USA

      • E.G.L. International
